The Living Maya
exists so that the indigenous Mopan and Q´eqchi´
Maya of Southern Belize can share the spirit of their culture. It documents
their traditional ways as well as the changes that have occurred overtime.
The voice of the documentary is Mayan. Contributors included village elders
and other leaders of the Mayan culture. Villagers of all ages shared life
stories, offered insight into their cultural history, and made available
a comprehensive and accurate glimpse of traditional daily living practices.
The Living Maya
addresses indigenous life issues including:
Mayan families
and communities
traditional celebrations
and cultural expressions
the Maya's relationship
with their environment
folklore and life stories of village elders-keepers of the Maya culture
historical events and socioeconomic conditions that have an impact on
today's Maya
